Unblock US-Only YouTube Videos Using ProxTube

watch US-only videos

I could see this while trying to watch a video few days back and no wonder even you would have seen similar screen while trying to watch a video on YouTube. The reason is that YouTube gives publishers an option to restrict the videos to some countries. So when you try to access the video outside that country, you see a screen similar to the image above.

The message – “This video is not available in your country” has nothing to do with Internet Censorship as the block is not placed by the Government of your country but it is the uploader who has restricted your access to the video.

Your access is blocked because of the IP address of your Internet Service Provider but thanks to proxy websites which can give you a virtual IP and lets you access blocked content but watching YouTube videos using a proxy website is tough and inconvenient.

The solution for this is ProxTube extension which is available for Chrome and Firefox and can be downloaded from the link at the end of this post. I stay outside US and I’m able to access all those videos which are restricted only to the United States.

While doing a little research, I also found an alternative on Digital Inspiration according to which you can replace the /watch?v= with /v For example, if the URL of the video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99bkrh0FMG4 the new URL would be http://www.youtube.com/v/99bkrh0FMG4 but again this method requires extra manual work.

Thanks to Malte for creating this extension.
