Android Market is Now Offering Premium Apps for $0.1

To celebrate the 10 billionth app download from Android Market, Google is making a selection of a few premium apps available for as little as 10p / 1o cents for ten days. While many apps on Android Market are available for free, the apps chosen by Google are some of the most popular premium apps that usually cost substantially more.

Tip: You can also download premium Android apps for free from GetJar.

Some of these apps include SoundHound, SwiftKey X and Paper Camera, as well as the smartphone equivalent of Photoshop – SketchBook. Also on offer are popular premium games like Minecraft and Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD. If you have been eyeing these apps up for some time but debating whether to pay the premium price tag, now may be a good time to check them out. They all cost as little as 10p/10c (plus tax) for the next ten days.

Reaching the 10 billionth download milestone shows just how popular Android is becoming, with Apple’s App Store reaching the same milestone only at the start of this year. The App Store has since passed 15 billion downloads, so Android still has a way to go before overtaking Apple, but with Android now making up around half of all smartphones it may not take Android Market very long to get to the same level.

One interesting note is that Android users tend to be less likely to spend money on apps than iPhone users, preferring to make use of the free apps available. This latest promotion by Google may be an attempt to get more Android users interested in paying for apps on their phones, in the hopes that this will attract more app developers to work with Android.

Personally, I have had my eye on a few of these apps for some time but never felt too keen on paying the premium price for them. I have particularly enjoyed playing Minecraft, a stripped down version of the desktop game that is a great way to pass the time while commuting. To get hold of the new apps you can simply visit Android Market and the promotion will be displayed at the top of the homescreen. Hurry though, as they are only available at this price for the next 10 days.
