New Facebook Messages Privacy Bug Found

Facebook is the most popular social network in the world. I could hardly find someone who does not have a Facebook account. With so many people on Facebook, privacy becomes a major concern if you do not wish to get annoyed by people with whom you do not wish to connect. Facebook’s privacy settings are quiet enough for a user to have a pleasant social experience without getting annoyed. But I recently found out a bug which might be a major concern to people who take their privacy very seriously.

Facebook messages privacy setting

I had been friends with Abhishek Kumar and to test Facebook’s privacy settings, I asked him to change his privacy settings for messages so that only his friends can message him (as shown above). Just after he did that, I unfriended him which was no less than a shock to him.

As you can see in the image below, I sent him a message after his privacy settings were changed and he was not my friend anymore on Facebook.

Facebook messages privacy bug

This seems to be a major privacy concern. Not minutes later, did my friend Michael Johnson tried it out with me and IT DID WORK. He was able to message me without any warning being displayed on his screen! At the end of this post you can find a video created by him which demonstrates the bug.

Facebook says

Changes to the “Who can message me” privacy setting may take up to 24 hours to take effect.

But I found that today I could message a lady who unfriended me 12 days back. Please note that she had these privacy settings enabled since many months. It could not be shown due to some privacy concerns!

I have sent an email Β to Facebook informing them about this bug. I am sure you will try to test it now. Make sure you do it before Facebook fixes it πŸ˜‰

  1. This is not a bug.. If you ever sent a msg to other person (or vise-versa) who has changed its privacy settings then for rest of the life 1st person (from whom its block) will able to send msg..

    • If I unfriend you because you are annoying me, according to my privacy settings you shouldn’t be able to message me! The privacy setting says that ONLY FRIENDS should be able to message me and you are not my friend, hence you should not be able to message me.
(I don’t mean YOU but just to explain, I used the word “you”)

    • πŸ˜› I know you can’t mean that.. πŸ˜›
Anyways.. Facebook won’t display message button if you set such privacy settings but if you add /messages/ after and before profile ID you will able to send msg only if anyone of you have ever exchanged even a single msg before..

    • But then if you will send PM to non-friends then they won’t be able to reply and this way SPAM can start and for people who don’t want to keep it as friends then they also need to keep because of SPAM..

    • In that case, you can report the messages or block that person! Also, “SPAM” is not the right word to be used here. Spam is not what people send via Messages. “Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, especially advertising, indiscriminately.” – Wikipedia. So, if a non-friend is sending you messages even if you do not want to talk to him/her, he/she is annoying you and the block option is always available for people who annoy you!

    • That still happens with me, I am unable to reply to people who message me sometimes because of the friend request block! It is usual and depends on an individual’s privacy setting. If you are sending message to a non-friend while you have these privacy settings set to “only friends” you are just fooling yourself.

    • Perceptions always differ. You may not want it to be solved because you may wish to send messages to people who have these strong privacy settings but might have unfriended you. That is not the case with everyone else. Instead of saying “Even if its a bug” you should accept that it is indeed a bug!!

  2. So you are saying if I block some one then also he would be able to send me messages… I dun buy that, if i unfriend any one that person will not be able to send me messages ever if I have the above settings, simple..
